Revisiting Goals Daily

Feb 20, 2024

Everyone knows that if you want to affect consistent and lasting change in your life, you need to have set goals. We are told that if we write down these goals, they will become that catalyst for change. The funny thing though is after we have written them down, how often do we revisit them? Do we make these goals so daunting and cumbersome to review that we lose interest? Do our busy schedules distract us or prevent us from prioritizing our day to keep us aligned with our goals? I must admit, I’ve been guilty of this as well. In writing out our goals, we sometimes make them so broad and nonspecific that have no emotion behind them. It becomes a rote routine that we feel compelled to do in order to say that we have completed that task. I’ve found an alternative method that seems to work for me. In revisiting some previous goal setting materials, I reintroduced myself to the idea of breaking down and categorizing my goals. In addition to writing down my specific goals, I’ve provided myself a compelling reason of why I needed to accomplish these goals. This brought me a clarity of purpose. The specific sections that I’ve broken them down to include: Career & Business Objectives, Financial & Investment, Health & Fitness, Relationships – Personal & Business, Self-Development & Contribution and Personal Time. To further simplify things, I made my goals short term. I rewrite them quarterly. I take a photo of my goals on my smartphone. This is so that I can refer to them and track my progress daily. I found that my goals are always morphing and expanding the more that I accomplish. I’ve become comfortable and accustomed to the fact that they always will be a “Work in Progress.” I look forward to hearing your thoughts. – Mark
